Modern Research

Indian Blue Water Lily and its chemical components have a number of biological activities and have been investigated for the following effects: antibacterial, antifungal, free radical scavenging, antioxidant, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, antiviral, anti-diarrheal, gastroprotective, anti-ulcerative colitis, antihyperglycemic, antidyslipidemic, anti-diabetic, cardioprotective and radioprotective effect, analgesic, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and particularly antidiabetic activity. In addition it has been shown to have specific effects such as intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering activity, modulation of expression of IL-8 gene expression in bronchial epithelial cells without effects on cell proliferation suggesting potential application in modulating the excessive CF lung inflammation, activates apoptosis of epithelial cancer cells through activation of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), TNF receptor (TNFR)-associated death domain (TRADD), and caspases.
